Hands
On
On May 9, 2007, a group of Peace Church members met to
participate in a community service project. Since the idea
was to make things rather than just give money, it was decided
to call the group “HANDS ON”. At
the first get together, 35 dog-bone pillows were stuffed, stitched,
and later delivered to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro.
Since
that first meeting in 2007, the group has gotten together
monthly to make a variety of pillows for use by Hospice,
the Wesley Long Cancer Center, Hospice of Davidson County,
nursing homes and many other local organizations and individuals.
Though it has been difficult to keep track of all donations,
it is a good estimate that 600 pillows have been distributed.
Several
special service projects have been completed. Nazareth
Children’s Home received decorative pillows when
the residents’ rooms were being refurbished. Teddy
bears were made for the Greensboro Police Department and
Greensboro Urban Ministry Partnership Village. Small pillows
have been made for children being cared for by the Kids’ Path
program of Greensboro Hospice.
Numerous
individuals have made items such as play mats, walker bags,
prayer shawls, sweaters and caps that have been distributed
by HANDS ON. HANDS ON continues to meet on the second Wednesday
of each month at 1:00 p.m., following the VSP luncheon.
Both men and women are welcome to participate. Please consider
giving your time and talent to this special ministry of
Peace Church. Also welcome are monetary donations that
will be used to purchase fabric and stuffing.
